"When you stop chasing the wrong things you give the right things a chance to catch you."

SOURCE: WHOWHATWEAR

As Maria Robinson once said, “Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.”  Nothing could be closer to the truth.  But before you can begin this process of transformation you have to stop doing the things that have been holding you back.
Here are some ideas to get you started:
  1. Stop spending time with the wrong people. – Life is too short to spend time with people who suck the happiness out of you.  If someone wants you in their life, they’ll make room for you.  You shouldn’t have to fight for a spot.  Never, ever insist yourself to someone who continuously overlooks your worth.  And remember, it’s not the people that stand by your side when you’re at your best, but the ones who stand beside you when you’re at your worst that are your true friends.
  2. Stop running from your problems. – Face them head on.  No, it won’t be easy.  There is no person in the world capable of flawlessly handling every punch thrown at them.  We aren’t supposed to be able to instantly solve problems.  That’s not how we’re made.  In fact, we’re made to get upset, sad, hurt, stumble and fall.  Because that’s the whole purpose of living – to face problems, learn, adapt, and solve them over the course of time.  This is what ultimately molds us into the person we become.
  3. Stop lying to yourself. – You can lie to anyone else in the world, but you can’t lie to yourself.  Our lives improve only when we take chances, and the first and most difficult chance we can take is to be honest with ourselves.  Read The Road Less Traveled.
  4. Stop putting your own needs on the back burner. – The most painful thing is losing yourself in the process of loving someone too much, and forgetting that you are special too.  Yes, help others; but help yourself too.  If there was ever a moment to follow your passion and do something that matters to you, that moment is now.
  5. Stop trying to be someone you’re not. – One of the greatest challenges in life is being yourself in a world that’s trying to make you likeeveryone else.  Someone will always be prettier, someone will always be smarter, someone will always be younger, but they will never be you.  Don’t change so people will like you.  Be yourself and the right people will love the real you.
  6. Stop trying to hold onto the past. – You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading your last one.
  7. Stop being scared to make a mistake. – Doing something and getting it wrong is at least ten times more productive than doing nothing.  Every success has a trail of failures behind it, and every failure is leading towards success.  You end up regretting the things you did NOT do far more than the things you did.
  8. Stop berating yourself for old mistakes. – We may love the wrong person and cry about the wrong things, but no matter how things go wrong, one thing is for sure, mistakes help us find the person and things that are right for us.  We all make mistakes, have struggles, and even regret things in our past.  But you are not your mistakes, you are not your struggles, and you are here NOW with the power to shape your day and your future.  Every single thing that has ever happened in your life is preparing you for a moment that is yet to come.
  9. Stop trying to buy happiness. – Many of the things we desire are expensive.  But the truth is, the things that really satisfy us are totally free – love, laughter and working on our passions.
  10. Stop exclusively looking to others for happiness. – If you’re not happy with who you are on the inside, you won’t be happy in a long-term relationship with anyone else either.  You have to create stability in your own life first before you can share it with someone else.  Read Stumbling on Happiness.
  11. Stop being idle. – Don’t think too much or you’ll create a problem that wasn’t even there in the first place.  Evaluate situations and take decisive action.  You cannot change what you refuse to confront.  Making progress involves risk.  Period!  You can’t make it to second base with your foot on first.
  12. Stop thinking you’re not ready. – Nobody ever feels 100% ready when an opportunity arises.  Because most great opportunities in life force us to grow beyond our comfort zones, which means we won’t feel totally comfortable at first.
  13. Stop getting involved in relationships for the wrong reasons. – Relationships must be chosen wisely.  It’s better to be alone than to be in bad company.  There’s no need to rush.  If something is meant to be, it will happen – in the right time, with the right person, and for the best reason. Fall in love when you’re ready, not when you’re lonely.
  14. Stop rejecting new relationships just because old ones didn’t work. – In life you’ll realize that there is a purpose for everyone you meet.  Some will test you, some will use you and some will teach you.  But most importantly, some will bring out the best in you.
  15. Stop trying to compete against everyone else. – Don’t worry about what others doing better than you.  Concentrate on beating your own records every day.  Success is a battle between YOU and YOURSELF only.
  16. Stop being jealous of others. – Jealousy is the art of counting someone else’s blessings instead of your own.  Ask yourself this:  “What’s something I have that everyone wants?”
  17. Stop complaining and feeling sorry for yourself. – Life’s curveballs are thrown for a reason – to shift your path in a direction that is meant for you.  You may not see or understand everything the moment it happens, and it may be tough.  But reflect back on those negative curveballs thrown at you in the past.  You’ll often see that eventually they led you to a better place, person, state of mind, or situation.  So smile!  Let everyone know that today you are a lot stronger than you were yesterday, and you will be.
  18. Stop holding grudges. – Don’t live your life with hate in your heart.  You will end up hurting yourself more than the people you hate.  Forgiveness is not saying, “What you did to me is okay.”  It is saying, “I’m not going to let what you did to me ruin my happiness forever.”  Forgiveness is the answer… let go, find peace, liberate yourself!  And remember, forgiveness is not just for other people, it’s for you too.  If you must, forgive yourself, move on and try to do better next time.
  19. Stop letting others bring you down to their level. – Refuse to lower your standards to accommodate those who refuse to raise theirs.
  20. Stop wasting time explaining yourself to others. – Your friends don’t need it and your enemies won’t believe it anyway.  Just do what you know in your heart is right.
  21. Stop doing the same things over and over without taking a break. – The time to take a deep breath is when you don’t have time for it.  If you keep doing what you’re doing, you’ll keep getting what you’re getting.  Sometimes you need to distance yourself to see things clearly.
  22. Stop overlooking the beauty of small moments. – Enjoy the little things, because one day you may look back and discover they were the big things.  The best portion of your life will be the small, nameless moments you spend smiling with someone who matters to you.
  23. Stop trying to make things perfect. – The real world doesn’t reward perfectionists, it rewards people who get things done.  Read Getting Things Done.
  24. Stop following the path of least resistance. – Life is not easy, especially when you plan on achieving something worthwhile.  Don’t take the easy way out.  Do something extraordinary.
  25. Stop acting like everything is fine if it isn’t. – It’s okay to fall apart for a little while.  You don’t always have to pretend to be strong, and there is no need to constantly prove that everything is going well.  You shouldn’t be concerned with what other people are thinking either – cry if you need to – it’s healthy to shed your tears.  The sooner you do, the sooner you will be able to smile again.
  26. Stop blaming others for your troubles. – The extent to which you can achieve your dreams depends on the extent to which you take responsibility for your life.  When you blame others for what you’re going through, you deny responsibility – you give others power over that part of your life.
  27. Stop trying to be everything to everyone. – Doing so is impossible, and trying will only burn you out.  But making one person smile CAN change the world.  Maybe not the whole world, but their world.  So narrow your focus.
  28. Stop worrying so much. – Worry will not strip tomorrow of its burdens, it will strip today of its joy.  One way to check if something is worth mulling over is to ask yourself this question: “Will this matter in one year’s time?  Three years?  Five years?”  If not, then it’s not worth worrying about.
  29. Stop focusing on what you don’t want to happen. – Focus on what you do want to happen.  Positive thinking is at the forefront of every great success story.  If you awake every morning with the thought that something wonderful will happen in your life today, and you pay close attention, you’ll often find that you’re right.
  30. Stop being ungrateful. – No matter how good or bad you have it, wake up each day thankful for your life.  Someone somewhere else is desperately fighting for theirs.  Instead of thinking about what you’re missing, try thinking about what you have that everyone else is missing.

well, this is awkward...

ALEXA CHUNG FOR MADEWELL JACKET

it's almost a new year and saying i've been on a bit of a hiatus would be the understatement of the year.

see? even in my pictures i can't look you guys in the face and say/type that. shame on me. and my room. but i digress.

i can assure you though - all loyal fellow fashionistas, recessionistas, and curious cats - that my one and only resolution (it's never too early) is to save up for my new handy dandy camera, snap away to my heart's content and start blogging my new style of blogging. it's not the most original but it's all i got. and most importantly, it's the realest and most important style i know: it's all about staying fly all 365 days (yeah aztecs and mayans. you guys can suck it) without breaking the bank. i'm not sure about you gals, but i don't work for vogue (yet?) and i can't afford isabel marant cashmere sweaters and helmut lang leather leggings (yet?).

No Regrets

THRIFTED TOP, RAY-BANS, ZARA JEANS, JOE'S JEANS SHOES

This weekend, me, my boyfriend, and the rest of his family celebrated his dad's birthday.

It was also the first time his extended family saw my new haircut. I've embraced my non-traditional Asian girl look and I don't regret it, nor do I wish I had my long hair back either but his family was so traditional, it made me nervous; his aunt had said to me that I should be following my husband's wishes and if he likes long hair then I'm (pretty much) not allowed to cut my hair... Did I mention she said all of this in really, really, broken English, so all I did at the moment was smile, and nod my head. I didn't find out what she had really said until my boyfriend and his sister translated for me.

Awkward birthday party I tell ya.

Sunday, July 31

Chopped.

DIY DIP-DYED MADEWELL SHIRT, TALULA SHORTS, JUSTFAB CLUTCH, F21 + CASIO ACCESSORIES, CONVERSES

Finally. A real picture (and by real, I mean clearer) of me and my haircut in a real outfit (and by real, I mean I actually wore it out). It's really been a month since I've really updated my blog with a real post (I have no idea what the last one was about).

Now that we have that cleared up...

Enjoy Balmain's F/W '11 collection (and by enjoy, I mean look that shit up yourself because it's worth it, I'm in love with it, and is indeed the bombdiggity).

Starting A-New.

WILFRED JUMPSUIT, ALDO WEDGES

Obviously the worst photo ev-ar, but we'll all deal.

So I haven't updated in awhile & (if you were wondering) a lot has changed, starting with the obvious: I've cut off my long locks. I just gathered up all my balls, and choppped it off. If you're wondering who did this awesome cut of the hair, just go to MessLook in Chinatown on Grand St. & look for Ricky Ren. Tell him I sent cha.

Secondly, I've started a new job & found a new love for Canadian designers who know my heart (snakeskin-print on a silk jumpsuit, high-waisted floral shorts, and T by A. Wang-like maxi dresses!). A new environment surrounded by some of the most amazing, and beautiful people - inside & out - is truly an awesome experience.

Not to mention, I haven't felt this good about myself in awhile before my haircut and new purchases. Oh, the things something so minuscule will do to ya.

Sunday, June 19

Hai. I'm Bobby Lee.

SATURDAY: MADEWELL SHIRT + BELT, F21 TANK + SHOES, H&M PANTS, F21 + CASIO + STUSSY + VINTAGE ACCESSORIES

SUNDAY: MADEWELL SHIRT, H&M TEE, MNG PANTS, CHRISTIAN SIRIANO FOR PAYLESS SHOES, JUSTFAB CLUTCH, VINTAGE ACCESSORIES

So, the title's a sum-up of my weekend and an inside joke. Kind of, sort of.

I'm finally done serving my duty as an American citizen and finally back to my life... which wasn't much to begin with, but! I can get back to more important things that I care about... like, what to do with how to get money, bonding with people who are only staying for the summer, and not getting (more) out of shape.

Obnoxious to-do list? Oh, only if you insist dear reader. But, patience is a virtue and I'll have it in an upcoming post.

P.S.

This little lady. Right. Here. She gets me everytime.

Tuesday, June 7

I haven't updated in awhile and it took about the same time for me to update last week's (2 weeks ago?) post... There's a pattern here. But hey, I know its summer, school's out and I can't possibly be working this hard, right? Wrong. I've got Jury Duty. And it's ruining my life. Stupid civic duty as an American.

555SOUL, THRIFTED TOP, MADEWELL, ARDEN B., VINTAGE GUCCI, JUSTFAB 'SALLY', SIMONETTA RAVIAZZA

But anyway, I wore the first outfit to my boyfriend's sister's graduation and surprisingly, it was really cold under the tent. Sigh Mother Nature.

And this outfit I wore today to Jury Duty. I know, I know. I did stick out like a sore thumb. But, I mean, c'mon. What's a fashion student doing indicting criminals? Anyway, these pants are awesome and Mango may just be one of my new favorite brands.

UNIQLO, HELLZ BELLZ, MNG, AA, CASIO, JUICY COUTURE

Sunday, May 22

Randomly spotted a flea market going on nearby my boyfriend's and found these floral beauties... They were getting ready to close so I didn't get a chance to check out the other rack, poop. So, for $1 a piece (yes. $1 for 100% silk, too) and a good cause, I left happy with these little numbers. My shopping need is pretty much complete for the month. Easily amused? Absooooooolutely.

P.S. Just recently found out that titles for my blog posts weren't necessary... I'm so glad I won't be needing to summon up extra brainpower to come up with a something creative anymore. Lazy? Absooooooooolutely.

so close, yet so far

H&M JACKET, F21 SWEATER, VINTAGE PANTS, STEVE MADDEN CLOGS, UO BAG, MADEWELL BELT, RAYBAN GLASSES

Maxi skirt? Nope! Maxi... Pants? Wide-legged pants is such a mouthful.

I've been on a pretty long hiatus, but I'm back! But while I watch this post, I'm writing How I Met Your Mother, so excuse me if I seem a bit distracted. But fortunately for people who like looking at pictures, nothing has crossed my mind worth writing about except that my girlfriends are back. You know what that means - it's summa-summa-summa tiiiiiiiime.

JESSICA SIMPSON PONYHAIR LEOPARD PRINT SHOES, COURTESY OF LAST CHANCE SHOES

++ Edit: I made it onto Chictopia's Style Gallery! One of the (weird but) proud fashionista moments.

after the storm

JUICY COUTURE SUNGLASSES, H&M NECKLACE, AA JUMPSUIT + SHIRT, UO BAG, JUSTFAB 'SALLY' SHOES

I've got aches all over my body from these drastic weather changes: it's thunderstorming like no tomorrow (so scary) and then it's 80 degrees like it's mid-June. Mother Nature's out to get us for taking our resources for granted.

I've been going through this mental process lately where I'm like, "Why do I even have a blog? Everyone has a blog; do I really think I'm that special or different?" I have heard that many bloggers go through this digital existential crisis. I think I finally have decided, though, what my blogging purpose is. Most bloggers have a lot of stunning expensive clothing and are meticulously groomed with manicures and perfect complexions. They are "aspirational" members of society, as in "My, I aspire to one day look like that." I think that my role in all of this is to serve as the middle ground. My clothing is not expensive, although occasionally I pull a Save-and-Splurge. I never pluck my eyebrows, I rarely maintain the upkeep on my hair. I bite my nails and hate to shave my legs. I have crooked silly teeth. I am very short. I am too self-concious when being photographed to really "model" to any degree. So, I'd like to think that my blog represents reality. Realistically, this is how a lot of girls dress and operate, within our means and motivation. This is how a real girl does it. If nothing else, I try to be a little bit interesting.
Seriously. Well said Madeline of Jean Greige.

I mean, it's nothing new, and I'm sure it's crossed aplenty of people's minds before but it's the way she put it into words that makes this so quote-able. I've never quite understood the "fashion blogs" with photos of six-foot tall, daddy long legged people in ripped denim booty shorts (have got to be vintage Levi's) and flimsy, sheer tops (Wang - duh.) that get a million hits. And they live in Greenland. Or Norway. In December. Nope. Never quite grasped that concept.

the little things

OLD NAVY VEST, MADEWELL SHIRT, JUST USA JEANS, JUST FAB 'SALLY' SHOES + 'SOPRANO' CLUTCH, CASIO WATCH, F21 + VINTAGE RINGS

Don't you love the way a simple and small thing can make you feel different or have the smallest impact to a drastic change only for the better?

*raises hand*

I had my bangs cut, hair layered a bit, and a complementary curling with 30% off at a recently opened hair salon in Chinatown called MessLook. Thanks Haeri! Something about even a slightest trim that'll make you feel brand new. I also had two packages this week sent in from JustFab.com, and am in love. A little thing like a package really makes my day, so a package with shoes and a clutch in it? Oh, might've just made the rest of the month for me. Thanks to my boyfriend and to the good people at JustFab.

I had also just celebrated one of my bestfriend's 20th birthday at Room Fifty 5, and I really enjoyed the small, relaxed lounge even though they charged me $12 for an Amaretto Sour - at least the bottle was free (totally incriminating btw). I'm such a huge party pooper, but for this girl and handful of other people, I'd sacrifice a lot (like from drinking a sip to a cup and a half, and enjoying loud music). I love you Mary Li, and in less than a year, I've felt like we've known each other for a lot longer. I'm so glad we've gotten this close, and you're so beautiful.

Tuesday, April 19

much needed + well-deserved

One of my bestfriends swung by the city for the weekend to get away from WestBubbleFuck (Fredonia - basically, Canada) and even though I had only spent ONE whole day with her, I'm extremely content. And it'll last me until she comes back... which is very, very soon for summer vacation.

  1. L: RAY-BANS, TORY BURCH FLATS
  2. M: AA SCARF, H&M JACKET + SHIRT, UO PANTS, VINTAGE VANS
  3. R: LEVI'S x PENDELTON JACKET, H&M DRESS, VINTAGE GEORGIA ARMANI, ALDO

Let's talk about my outfit: I'm not very good at packing. Let's face it: I'm just as indecisive as the next girl. I'll pick out an outfit the night before, and when I put it on the next day, I just "don't feel like it". I know there's someone out there who will co-sign with me.

I've finally finished applying for school - pt. 1. Hey, progress is progress. Baby steps, ok? I swear I'd be the happiest I've been since I met my boyfriend if I could finish all this business before the end of this week.

I've never regretted a retail decision like this since leaving American Apparel. If you're going to own a small business, be as professional as big business people - it only makes sense.

Looks like it's going to be another week of on and off rain, swinging moods, and days spent watching Netflix. The upside? My boyfriend, and a new haircut. Let's hope this goes well.

Reunions with the Past.

H&M JACKET, AA SWEATER, UO PANTS, CHRISTIAN SIRIANO FOR PAYLESS SHOES

I just installed some WiFi in my house. I'm so excited - I wish it could show through typing.

But anyway, this is what I wore for a family reunion dinner in Chinatown with some most relatives from my Grandfather's that I haven't seen for 10-13 years. There were some that I have no recollection of at all... but that's what the first hour of the dinner was for. I got to know most better and remember other memories.

Although, I received a text message this weekend from an ex-something that I really didn't need to be reminded of nor do I ever want to have a reunion with. Some people say that it's never to late to __, but I think there is a deadline for apologies, and once you go past it, I don't forgive and I don't forget. What I will have done, is look forward, appreciate the things/people I have now, and not look back.

This post has been way past overdue considering we went on this trip to Washington, D.C. last weekend. It would've been amazing if: 1. it wasn't so crowded, 2. had such little room, and 3. if Mother Nature had made its mind about the weather. It was literally on and off raining, hailing, thunderstorming (if that's a word), then sunshine. I guess I'm complaining till this day because I was wearing flats. Talk about unprepared.

Otherwise, it was beautiful and we had a pretty eventful 25 (straight awake) hours.

In a nutshell: woke up 4:30AM, left the house @ 6AM, got on the highway around 7AM, got lost, arrived in Washington around 2/3PM, left the festival around 4/5PM, drove to get Roy Rogers (since there are none here) then got home around 9/10PM, only to get ready for my boyfriend's sister's bestfriend's belated 21st party at Hudson Terrace. Stayed there until they closed: 4:30AM. Drove to 53rd & 6th for halal food, and got into bed @ 5:30AM.

So much for the nutshell.

Yeah, yeah. I'm a bit whiney, but hey - staying awake for so long can really mess a person up.

P.S. I'm in love with this photo. And not just because it's of me & him.

Only The Brave.

H&M HAT, TORY BURCH JACKET, H&M BUTTONDOWN, F21 SWEATER, UNIQLO JEANS, ALDO BAG, DOLCE VITA FOR TARGET BOOTS

...plus one of my favorite magazines.

After today's 3 hour group interview for Diesel, I realized how much I love being:
  • sandwiched between two people over 5'10
  • sandwiched between four people over 5'10
  • the token Asian girl in an entire group of 16 people
  • called "oriental"
Clearly, I'm a rug.

Ok, but in all serious-ness, I love pulling Ted's (you'll come to find I make a lot of HIMYM references) - I mean c'mon people: c-a-s-h-i-e-r, f-r-a-n-g-r-a-n-c-e. Other than that, they didn't lie when they said the interview was going to be fun mainly because it was. And my reward to going through an interview for 3 hours with a bunch of tall strangers? Jamba Juice and Doughnut Plant. Omnomnomnom.

In the meantime, I'll be in Brooklyn/Queens for the majority of the time being. Wish me luck!

Never Again Will I.

MATERIAL GIRL PARKA, VINTAGE CARDIGAN, MADEWELL SHIRT, AA PANTS + SCARF + SHOES + NAIL LACQUER IN L'ESPRIT, VINTAGE GUCCI BAG, F21 + CR + STUSSY RINGS, SIMONETTA RAVIAZZA SUNGLASSES

First off, can I just say: I normally stand like this when I'm waiting for something and on my phone. So it's not some kind of cool pose I do, although I guess it does make me seem a little pretentious; as if I'm getting important e-mails, texts from a million people, or scheduling millions of events. As if I'm so popular...

Anyhow, during the week, while I took up some university English assignment for someone, I thought about my next blog post (see? no life) and figured I wanted to make a list. Not just a list for people to read, but for myself as well (I like to look back on my blog, actually. No life, ex. #2). So here it goes:
  1. Never again (try) will I ever stress myself out by putting off a HUGE homework assignment to the last minute i.e. 5 assignments, and only 2 and half days to do it.
  2. I will never put on too much foundation because I'm considerate and never wanna smush my makeup on someone else's face.
  3. I will not leave this upcoming job because I need to: a. feel a sense of accomplishment by staying somewhere for longer than 9 months, and b. I need California to happen.
  4. Never again do I wanna read 30 pages under pressure.
  5. Never again will I do homework assignments on my bed. Laying down. On my pillow.
  6. I will not (try) buy anything until after the summer.
I already feel a bit of accomplishment coming over me.

I Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way.

H&M CARDIGAN + BAG, AA BODYSUIT + BELT, MADEWELL JEANS + SHOES, F21 + CR + STUSSY RINGS, SIMONETTA RAVIAZZA SUNGLASSES

What better way to spend a beautiful 70 degree weather day outside of the city, taking a roadtrip with the people you cherish the most (besides driving in a convertible with the top down, and maybe with my family members too, but who's complaining)?

My favorite part of the day besides the weather? Walking past Hermes 3 times, inside jokes and constant giggling, court food (YUUUM for fake Chinese!), and getting lost in Clinton (FYI: the ghetto. Thank goodness we didn't take the big, shiny Lexus. But I digress.) and ending the day with what other diner than ol' faithful Vegas.

Next time I go, definitely going for the cheesesteaks. Gino's and Pat's isn't ready for little Asian girls with big appetites all running on the same cycle.

TMI?

It's gonna be legen - wait for it - DADDY.
